Why an XRechnung will not simply open
An XRechnung is not an image and not an ordinary PDF. It is a structured XML file written for machines: the amount is not text on a page, it sits in a field with a fixed name. Double-clicking it therefore opens either nothing at all or a wall of angle brackets.
ZUGFeRD and Factur-X are the opposite and confusing anyway: you see a perfectly normal PDF, but the actual invoice data is carried inside it as an attachment. Anyone who does not find that attachment works from the printed page and misses that the machine-readable data can disagree with it.
The viewer takes both cases. It reads the structure out and presents it the way a person reads an invoice — with labels rather than field numbers.
Which formats the viewer opens
XRechnung 3.0 as UBL 2.1 and as CII (UN/CEFACT D16B) — both syntaxes German authorities ask for. The same file is usually valid Peppol BIS Billing 3.0 as well.
ZUGFeRD 2.x and Factur-X as a hybrid PDF: the viewer pulls out the embedded XML and shows what it contains, not only the visible page.
All of these rest on the European standard EN 16931. If your file follows that standard, the viewer can read it.
What happens to your file
The uploaded file is processed in memory, the result is displayed, and the file is then deleted — including when something goes wrong while reading it. We keep no copy and store no invoice content from uploaded files.
That is not a setting you would have to go and find. It is how the thing works: the viewer has nowhere for your invoice to end up.
If the invoice looks wrong
The viewer shows what is in the file. It does not judge whether the file satisfies every rule. If you need to know whether an invoice you received is formally valid — because your input-tax deduction depends on it, for instance — check it with the validator. That runs against the official German checking standard and names every rule the file fails.
